Abstract

The aim of this research program is to understand how religious knowledge of the Salafi movements is produced, distributed, consumed and transformed on a transnational level and a local level. The Salafi-movement is one of the most widespread Islamic movements, with a major influence in the Middle East and Europe. In order to understand its impact in the Mid-dle East and Europe (in particular the Netherlands) an interdisciplinary team of researchers will use an innovative approach of the subject by studying the full cycle of production, trans-mission, consumption and transformation of religious knowledge. The researchers will engage with several major themes in the study of Muslim societies and communities such as how Salafis build a transnational movement, the fragmentation of religious authority, individuali-sation of Islam and the influence of modern media.
