Abstract

The project here proposed involves the third volume in a multi-volume literary history of Ancient Greek Narrative (Studies in Ancient Greek Narrative). It consists of three subprojects, which deal with space in archaic lyric, Attic drama, and the Hellenistic epyllion. These three areas of Ancient Greek Literature have been chosen because in depth narratological analysis, of general aspects and especially of space, is lacking. The synthetic volume will be the third volume, on Space in Ancient Greek Literature. Questions discussed will include the way in which space, including objects, is represented in the text, and the various functions such space descriptions may have. Special attention will be paid to the much debated question of the relation between description and narration, and the for Ancient Literature so important device of the ekphrasis.
