Abstract
In many African cultures, drumming is not only a musical expression but also a medium for linguistic meaning. This project explores the linguistic properties of drumming with Senegal’s sabar and Nigeria’s Yoruba bàtá and dùndún drums. Combining grammatical analysis with linguistic and musicological research, it studies the integrated language-music competence of expert drummers. Beyond deepening our understanding, the project seeks to raise the international visibility and recognition of African drummers and their artistry. Key initiatives include developing a Yoruba drum language program for Nigerian schools and producing a documentary on the legendary Senegalese sabar master, Doudou Ndiaye Rose.
