Abstract

The applicant´s current VENI-project has uncovered a large number of important works by the now little-known imperial chapel master Antonio Bertali (1604-1669). The applicant has also collected data concerning the historical background of these works and about the way in which they were originally performed. In the proposed project, the applicant will produce scholarly editions of selected works, which in turn will serve as the basis of a performance and recording directed by the applicant. Together with partners of international repute (Carus Verlag, Stuttgart; Royal Conservatoire, The Hague; Steven Devine; Concertstudio De Verwerij) the music (in the form of sheet music and Cd) will be made available to musicians, scholars, and music lovers world-wide. The added value of the project lies in the union of scholar and performer in the person of the main applicant. The entire process leading from a barely readable manuscript on a shelf in an archive to a widely disseminated recording on the Cd-shelf of any music lover is governed by a single unified vision. Bridging the gap between musicologist and performer lends paradigmatic importance to the project. Lastly, Early Music students will be able to follow the process through workshops and performance.
